On this day, let us remember, reflect, and re-commit to war no more.
For those who want to mark this day a little differently, the soldier’s tower in Hart House is open every year on this day. It’s an opportunity not just to remember those young people who lost their lives for Canada, but to see a lovely historic corner of the city. The tower was built in 1923-24, originally to remember those young university students who lost their lives in the first world war. Standing at 143 feet in height, it is still an imposing reminder to University of Toronto students today.

Happy new year to all Ethiopian Canadians. May the year now beginning be blessed with peace, justice, health and prosperity.
I was honoured to address Ethiopian Canadians yesterday at their festival in Christie Pits park. Wonderful food, music and dancing were on offer and I stayed most of the afternoon.

Toronto-Danforth Greens extend their sympathy to Jack Layton’s family and to his NDP family and supporters. Jack will always be remembered in this community as a tireless fighter, a passionate spokesperson, a man who loved Canada and inspired everyday heroes.

I’ve cleaned out the office (though I still need to fetch the signs), I’ve spent most of yesterday sleeping. Yesterday, I also canvassed again for the first time since the election. I will have to develop new strategies but reaching out to constituents will remain an important part of what I do. But today, I just want to wish all mothers out there a joyous day with their children. It is children who drive me. It is children whose eyes and smiles invariably make me think that I must work harder. And it is my protective mothering instinct that motivates my energies. So this day is very special, for all of us Greens. Read more »

May your blessings outnumber
the shamrocks that grow,
And may trouble avoid you
wherever you go.

Congratulations to all women on this centenary Women’s Day when we celebrate one hundred years of progress for women. I’ve been listening to Peter Gabriel sing his wonderful song Shaking the Tree with Youssou N’Dour in celebration of Women’s Day. Would be even better if it were written by a woman, but it’s hard to complain about men singing in celebration of women’s achievements.
Here is Elizabeth May being her usual eloquent self, Read more »

Happy Family Day 2011 to all. It’s beautiful and bright, and there are lots of things to do. My family will be spending the day mostly at home because my son has the chicken pox, but we might get out to a park for a while.

Just wanted to wish everyone a Happy Canada Day today. Between going out to meet people this morning and this evening, I hope to drop by on the action both on Gerrard Street and at Riverdale Park East and celebrate this great country we live in.

On this first day of Ramadan, my thoughts go out to my friends observing this time of reflection, patience and spirituality.
Let’s all take this time also to honour and respect Islam as one of the great religions of the world, well represented in this community.
Please wish your Muslim friends a blessed Ramadan.

I just spent Canada Day at Harbourfront and didn’t canvass at all today. My son buried his dad in the beach sand at HTO Park along with a few little friends who had to join in the fun. We got some yummy fruits and Tibetan and Indian food, and listened to music on the freshly laid astroturf at Harbourfront Centre. What a great day.
