Join women on the bridge

for International Women’s Day
Thursday, 2012 March 8, 5pm
East end of Bloor Street viaduct
(west of Broadview subway station,
north side parkette at Danforth and Cambridge)

Join Adriana Mugnatto-Hamu, Green Party of Canada candidate in the current by-election for Toronto-Danforth for a march in solidarity with people everywhere who seek equality for women, especially as elected representatives in government.  In Canada, only 25% of our elected representatives in the House of Commons are women.  Adriana is the only woman in a field of 11 candidates in the Toronto-Danforth by-election.     Read more »

Happy Hanukkah 2011

Our family just celebrated the first night of Hanukkah with menorah, latkes, dreidels and other games.  May your holidays be filled with light and happiness.

Remembrance Day 2011

On this day, let us remember, reflect, and re-commit to war no more.

For those who want to mark this day a little differently, the soldier’s tower in Hart House is open every year on this day.  It’s an opportunity not just to remember those young people who lost their lives for Canada, but to see a lovely historic corner of the city.  The tower was built in 1923-24, originally to remember those young university students who lost their lives in the first world war.  Standing at 143 feet in height, it is still an imposing reminder to University of Toronto students today.

Happy new year to all Ethiopian Canadians.  May the year now beginning be blessed with peace, justice, health and prosperity.

I was honoured to address Ethiopian Canadians yesterday at their festival in Christie Pits park.  Wonderful food, music and dancing were on offer and I stayed most of the afternoon.

Condolences to Jack Layton’s family

Toronto-Danforth Greens extend their sympathy to Jack Layton’s family and to his NDP family and supporters.  Jack will always be remembered in this community as a tireless fighter, a passionate spokesperson, a man who loved Canada and inspired everyday heroes.

Happy Mother’s Day 2011

I’ve cleaned out the office (though I still need to fetch the signs), I’ve spent most of yesterday sleeping.  Yesterday, I also canvassed again for the first time since the election.  I will have to develop new strategies but reaching out to constituents will remain an important part of what I do.  But today, I just want to wish all mothers out there a joyous day with their children.  It is children who drive me.  It is children whose eyes and smiles invariably make me think that I must work harder.  And it is my protective mothering instinct that motivates my energies.  So this day is very special, for all of us Greens.     Read more »

2011 Mar 17: Happy St Patrick’s Day

May your blessings outnumber

And may trouble avoid you

Women’s Day Greetings 2011

Congratulations to all women on this centenary Women’s Day when we celebrate one hundred years of progress for women. I’ve been listening to Peter Gabriel sing his wonderful song Shaking the Tree with Youssou N’Dour in celebration of Women’s Day. Would be even better if it were written by a woman, but it’s hard to complain about men singing in celebration of women’s achievements.

Here is Elizabeth May being her usual eloquent self,      Read more »

Enjoy the day with your family

Happy Family Day 2011 to all.  It’s beautiful and bright, and there are lots of things to do.  My family will be spending the day mostly at home because my son has the chicken pox, but we might get out to a park for a while.

Happy Valentine’s Day 2011

Wishing everyone a wonderful day today.

We’ll be celebrating with a family dinner featuring a lot of red.

Mmmm.  Beets.
