RCMP election rigging

It’s disturbing to consider that the decisive factor in delivering a Conservative government in the last election was a personal decision by RCMP Commissioner Giuliano Zaccardelli to name Ralph Goodale in a criminal investigation in the middle of the election period.   Mr. Goodale was later cleared of wrongdoing.

Paul Kennedy, chairman of the commission for public complaints against the RCMP, says there is no evidence that Zaccardelli had an objective to swing the election.  That is, however, the obvious reason that leaps to mind, and no other is offered.  Furthermore, Zaccardelli went on to make the charges public during the election, and sent a letter announcing this to an NDP complainant, MP Judy Wasylycia-Leis of Winnipeg North.

It is outrageous to have the national police force stepping into elections this way.   All parties must work together to make sure this never happens again.  Today, Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day responded with assurances that Mr. Kennedy’s recommendations will be implemented immediately.  The NDP’s Wasylycia-Leis, who was in the centre of the controversy, says she has no regrets, and preferred to blame Mr. Goodale.
