Al Hart is a local lawyer and dedicated father of two
girls (ages 12 and 6). His decision to run as the Green Party of Canada candidate in Toronto–Danforth is
motivated by his commitment to bringing vision and integrity into politics at the federal level. As a long-time friend
of Green Party leader Jim Harris, Al believes that the Green Party offers long-term solutions to sustainable economic
growth.
Al received a B.A. in English and an LL.B. from Queen's University. He has practiced law in Toronto for 20 years, as an Assistant Crown Attorney and as an immigration lawyer. He is currently working in the area of youth criminal justice, as well as continuing his pro bono work with refugees.
As a resident of Toronto–Danforth for 16 years, Al knows the issues that concern the community and will ensure that the 2006 election addresses these issues. He has been active in the community, and is Past President of the Innstead Housing Cooperative Inc. as well as being a current member.
“Nothing happens without a strong economy, but it has to be based on sustainable principles,” Al states. "For example, Toronto experienced 48 smog alert days in 2005, and residents of Toronto–Danforth have learned the consequences of poor air quality. Fixing the chronically overworked and under-funded TTC is an important piece of the overall solution. I believe the federal government should take the lead in encouraging adequate funding and management of mass transit in Canadian cities and suburbs as a major step to meet our announced environmental goals."
