Send a Valentine to Temagami

Local Green Ian Jackson asks us to take action on Valentine’s Day for the Temagami old-growth forest.  Here is the email sent by Earthroots:

In February 2004 Earthroots challenged the logging plan for Temagami, charging that it did not follow the direction of the Temagami Land Use Plan, which mandates integrated planning for commercial-industrial, recreational and cultural heritage values on the Temagami land base. The Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) responded by launching the Temagami Integrated Planning process.

The MNR has recently released its preliminary plans for the recreational management of Temagami’s back-country. These plans have been posted on the Environmental Bill of Rights (EBR) website and the deadline for public comment is fast approaching on February 14th, 2007, at 5:00 PM.

It is very important that the public responds to the preliminary plans, as they will have a significant impact on which values are represented in the management of the Temagami region.

Earthroots believes that, while making some positive steps, the plans have serious shortcomings, especially in terms of motorized access. We encourage the public to comment on the Temagami Integrated Plan, to ensure that ecological integrity of the region is maintained.
