2007 Mar 2: A convenient Oscar

Al Gore’s “An Inconvenient Truth” just won the Oscar for best documentary.  Jack Layton will be screening the film on March 2 at Riverdale Collegiate Institute at 6 pm.  There will be a panel discussion afterwards, so the evening will end at 10 pm.  If you haven’t seen the film, take this opportunity to view it and to tell our MP what needs to be done.

Congratulations Mr. Gore.  May your movie inspire politicians the world over to speedier action.

Another great film is “The Story of Stuff” – 20 minutes, rapid-fire style, free (for distribution as well) and the website features hundreds of organizations, resources/information, annotated script, suggested reading/ideas for educational activities and discussion topics for local screenings.

    Some excerpts:

… takes viewers on a provocative tour of our consumer-driven culture — from resource extraction to iPod incineration — exposing the real costs of this use-it and lose-it approach to stuff. …

… activist Annie Leonard, the film’s narrator and an expert on the materials economy, examines the social, environmental and global costs of extraction, production, distribution, consumption and disposal. … isolate[s] the moment in history where … trend of consumption mania began. … examines how economic policies of the post-World War II era ushered in notions of consumerism — and how those notions are still driving much of the U.S. and global economies today.

… consumer mania may have been born from the post World War II era, but economic manipulation has driven consumerism to where it is today. … demonstrates that products are either designed to be regularly replaced or to convince consumers that their stuff needs to be upgraded. This notion of planned and perceived obsolescence drives the machine of American consumerism year round. …
