Focusing on cars paves our city and divides our neighbourhoods. It challenges the health of air, earth and water — and our own health suffers. As we rebuild our old urban infrastructure, it’s time to rethink the way we do things and plan wisely.
Federal funding can promote community engagement in designing neighbourhoods that are safe, efficient, healthy, cohesive and resilient.
If it is safe for children it will be safe for all
I applaud the work of 8-80cities.org working to build clean, safe, accessible and healthy cities that work for the young and old alike.
We all should know that diversity makes for a rich tapestry, and we must understand that all the threads of the tapestry are equal in value no matter what their colour.

The stunning diversity of the globe pulses through the fabric of our communities. We have Chinese, Vietnamese, Greek, Italian, Indian, Pakistani and Ethiopian neighborhoods, many other cultures, and a spectrum of faiths. We have single parents juggling work, immigrants seeking a future for their children, seniors who still struggle with english and others who remember Canada a century ago, young students expanding their horizons, gay couples welcoming cherished adopted children into their loving arms, mixed-racial families, mixed-cultural families and members of First nations with an ancient connection to this great land.
Building cohesion from this diversity is both challenging and exciting. When Christians, Muslims and Jews held a peace march here and I shared in food and prayer, it gave me profound hope for the world.

Social Justice is one of the four pillars of the global Green movement. We need to strengthen our support for the vulnerable in tough economic times, and break the pattern of the wealthy becoming richer while more Canadians are driven into poverty.
Seniors — The Green party has a generous seniors supplement built into our tax shift. Seniors who carefully saved all their lives for retirement have been hurt by property tax increases and the sluggish economy.
Youth — Youth unemployment is double the average, affecting one in five. The Green Party has budgeted for a substantial increase to financing youth education and employment.
People with disabilities — The Green party would introduce a targeted guaranteed income for people with disabilities immediately, and then expand it to all Canadians.
Guaranteed Annual Income — A Green government will replace the current inefficient and degrading hodgepodge of income support programmes with a guaranteed base income for all. Guaranteed income is less expensive for the taxpayer and more generous for the beneficiary.
