Earth Hour 2008

Don’t forget to turn off all your electricity for Earth Hour this year.

And while you enjoy a candlelit dinner, consider how you can make some changes that go beyond that one hour.

When these big companies that own and operate buildings in the “triangle” turn 75 % of their lights off overnight when no one is in the building, I’ll consider doing my part. As it is now, one of those buildings use as much electricity to keep their lights on in one night as I would use for my whole house in one year! And I live in northern Ontario! And the bad part is, there is likely no living persons, (night watchmen), in those buildings as they are now security monitored electronically

    Hi Wayne,

I’m looking forward to seeing how much less electricity we’ll use for that hour. Last year it was a bunch of internet-connected nerds who participated, and it was only 5 minutes long. This year, with the endorsement of the City and organizations like WWF, a lot of offices and businesses will be participating. The effect could be significant.

Now it is only for an hour. In the grand scheme of things, that’s really not a lot. But I do hear people talking and they’re thinking already about all the things they could unplug. That kind of thinking, urged on every year, could make a dramatic difference. And more and more it will translate into pressure in the workplace to do the right thing too.

    Thanks for your thoughts,

    Adriana
