About Sharon Howarth
Sharon Howarth was the Toronto-Danforth candidate for the Green Party of Canada in the 40th Canadian federal election (in 2008). The Green candidate for the 41st general election (2009?) is Adriana Mugnatto-Hamu.
Sharon Howarth is passionate about her riding and was described as ‘tenacious’ by the editor of ETC News. As a founding member of Toronto Energy Coalition and their ‘Breathe Much’ lawn sign campaign, Sharon has earned this esteemed title by her tireless efforts of door knocking and asking people to put up signs. These signs raised awareness of the Portland’s Energy Centre exacerbation of climate change, smog and related diseases.
Sharon has been active in community work in Riverdale for 25 years starting with the school her two daughters attended. Over the years she has been involved with water quality issues (promoting wetlands restoration/planting events) and community gardens (beautification of the Gerrard/Boston Parkette which won the city’s Beautification Award). Sharon was nominated as a finalist for the Green Toronto Awards as a member of the Toronto Bay Initiative working on the Spadina Quay Wetland. She has also been involved with other groups/projects including The Community Liaison Committee for the Naturalization of the Mouth of the Don River and Citizens for a Safe Environment. Sharon has been very active with the East Toronto Community Coalition in the citizens’ fight against the big-box development on Eastern Avenue.
Sharon has given numerous deputations both at City Hall and Queen’s Park. She is also a founding member of The Next Generation, a group that promotes renewable energy as the basis of a thriving, sustainable economy.
Sharon states “the existing available alternatives are blocked by the lack of government will”, and she pledges to continue speaking up to affect the necessary sustainable changes.
