Big Box vs common sense

NOTE THE RESCHEDULED DATE BELOW

On May 21 and 22 at 10 am, the Ontario Municipal Board will begin hearings into what may turn out to be a Wal-Mart on the Portlands.  The East Toronto Community Coalition is one of the key groups fighting the proposal.  To get involved, contact Kelly Carmichael.

The Toronto-Danforth Federal Green Party Association opposes the proposed SmartCentres development on Eastern Avenue at the former site of Toronto Film Studios.  We support the East Toronto Community Coalition in its efforts to promote an alternative that enhances the existing community and acts as a gateway, rather than a barrier, to the Portlands.     Read more »

2008 Mar 17: Byelections announced in Willowdale and Toronto Centre

Prime Minister Stephen Harper has announced byelections in 4 ridings for Monday, March 17.  Two of those ridings are in the Toronto area, Willowdale and Toronto Centre just west of us.

Note that March 17 is St. Patrick’s Day, the day we paint things Green.

I urge everyone to get involved.  The Green Party candidate in the riding next door is Chris Tindal.  He is one of my favourite Green Party people.  We’ve worked together a number of times.   He is poised, knowledgeable and thoughtful.  I would love to see him get the seat, but he’ll need to beat Bob Rae, running for the Liberals.

2007 Dec 21: Kensington Festival of Lights 2007

Sorry for the late notice, but tonight is the longest night of the year.  And as every year on the winter solstice, Kensington market comes alive with an interactive, commercial free celebration where the night is lit up with candles, lanterns and a raging bonfire to end it off.

Kensington Festival of Lights
Friday, 2007 December 21, 6 pm sharp
corner of Augusta and Oxford
in Kensington Market
416 598-3729 — redpepper.spectacle@sympatico.ca

Unite to ignite the longest, darkest night

Joina cavalcade of costumed characters, giant puppets, stiltwalkers and firebreathers in a luminescent lantern-lit carnival parade in Toronto’s legendary Kensington Market.  Journey through narrow streets, encounter surprise theatrics on rooftops and in storefronts — revel in a fiery solstice send-off at Bellevue Square Park.

Bang a drum or a pot or pan, ring a bell, sing a song, carry a lantern, wear a costume …this is a participatory event!

Come celebrate the return of light!  Handmade and commercial-free since 1988.

2007 Nov 27: Rally against uranium mining

Donna Dillman is moving her hunger strike to Queen’s Park.  Please join her in her call for a moratorium on uranium mining.

Rally for a moratorium on uranium mining
Tuesday, 2007 November 27, 10:30 am
Princess Margaret Hospital

(University Avenue, just south of Queen’s Park, at Orde St.)

Donna Dillman is a Green Party member who is active in the Community Coalition Against Mining Uranium (CCAMU)

She has been on a hunger strike since October 8, asking Premier McGuinty for a moratorium on uranium mining.  The mining company has now evicted her from their gates.  Because her quarrel is with Premier McGuinty anyway, she’s moving to Queen’s Park.  She’s asking people to rally with her at Princess Margaret hospital, and to march the short distance to Queen’s Park at 11 am tomorrow.

Donna is still walking so she will join us for the march.  She has also been asking people to put up homemade signs that say “Bring Grandma Home”.  She would like to spend Christmas with her grandchildren, but won’t give up until she gets her moratorium.

Her mind is clear as a bell.  She accepts juices.  I’m planning on bringing some warm cider.  Please join me.
