Green Party calls for renewed focus on equality on International Women’s Day

OTTAWA – The Green Party is celebrating International Women’s Day and calling for a renewed focus on achieving equality for women in Canada.

“The situation for women has improved immensely over the past century, but there is much work to be done. Women still earn only about 70 percent of what men take home,” said Green Party leader Elizabeth May. “Unfortunately, the situation has been made worse by the regressive actions of Prime Minister Stephen Harper, who has done more damage to issues important to women in two years than many of us thought possible. Carbon tax petition

I’ve been participating in JustEarth, an environmental coalition spearheaded by former MP Lynn McDonald when the riding was called Broadview-Greenwood.

Although Lynn is an NDP member, she is pushing for a carbon tax, which the NDP has so far rejected.  If you have some time, download the carbon tax petition and get your neighbours to sign it.  In my experience, it’s actually an easy sell.

Be sure to mention that the petition specifically asks that the carbon tax be offset by a corresponding reduction in income taxes, and that these reductions be structured so that low-income Canadians aren’t hurt by the change.

I’m sure they’ve learned their lesson

Well, we’re back to sending detainees into Afghan custody.  But this time, we’re convinced they won’t be torturing anyone.  Of course, we were convinced of that before.  When human rights organizations think there’s a problem, we should be concerned.

Monbiot on why flying kills

I think I need a new category.  This post isn’t exactly scaremongering, it’s more like guilt-tripping.  I discovered this post from George Monbiot while looking up background information for my previous post, which was also one massive guilt trip.  Guilt-tripping is not what I like to do, and clearly it’s not something Mr. Monbiot feels entirely comfortable with, either.  In this video, he repeats what he articulated to a Toronto audience in 2006:     Read more »
